About the Faculty Bibliography
- What is the Faculty Bibliography?
The NYU College of Dentistry Faculty Bibliography is a service of the
Ehrman Digital Library which is the electronic arm of the
Waldman Dental Library.
The purpose of the Bibliography is to gather citations to
publications of NYU College of Dentistry faculty into a single easy
to use database.
Besides providing a convenient overview of faculty publications,
the Bibliography is part of the School of Medicine's
online faculty research tracking system, which includes three
mutually supporting online databases:
-
The Faculty Resource Catalog
.
The FRC is a structured, controlled vocabulary database of
basic faculty information and research interests,
based on analysis of actual published work, grants and research. The FRC is
the College of Dentistry's gateway to national research databases such as the
Community of Science. The FRC tracks
all faculty of the rank of assistant professor or higher.
-
The Faculty Bibliography.
The subject of this FAQ. Like the FRC, the Faculty Bibliography tracks publications
of all faculty of the rank of assistant professor or higher.
- What's included?
The Faculty Bibliography endeavors to include all published
articles, chapters, and books written by eligible faculty. It does not
include "preprint", "in press", "submitted", or "accepted" publications.
For inclusion, the faculty member must be named as an author in the
publication.
At present the Bibliography contains only publications in traditional
media; web sites and similar publishing may be incorporated at a later
date.
- Where do the citations come from?
Citations are gathered from
various online databases, most prominently Medline and
MEDCat
(the Library's online catalog). Citations also come from
Biological Abstracts, EMBASE,
Web of Science, and PsychInfo and other databases.
Medline, PyschInfo, and
other databases are available to NYU faculty, staff, and
students through
OVID.
Most non-OVID databases can be accessed
via the Waldman Dental Library's
homepage.
The Bibliography also contains citations to published works
that do not appear in online databases, but which have been identified
and suggested by faculty themselves and verified by the Library.
- Some of my publications are
missing. How can I get them added?
Unfortunately, it's impossible for us to catch and include every faculty
publication as soon as it appears in print.
Among other things, there is always a time lag between publication
and inclusion in online citation databases.
The Library always welcomes submissions and corrections from the faculty. You may
drop off citations at the Library Circulation Desk
or you may email us at
dentallibrary@nyu.edu.
In the case of very recent publications the Bibliography can be
supplemented by searching under the author's name in the National
Library of Medicine's "Pre-Medline" database. There is a link to
this database on the results page of a Bibliography author search
that retrieves publications added to "Pre-Medline"
during the last 90 days.
- Some of the publications listed under my name are not mine.
How can I get them removed?
Unfortunately, matching faculty names against published citations is at best an
inexact science. Please let us know about any problems of this nature you encounter.
The Library always welcomes corrections from the faculty. You may
drop off corrections at the Library Circulation Desk
or you may email us at
dentallibrary@nyu.edu.
- Why can't I click on a citation to get the full text?
In some cases you can. If a publisher has placed the text of an article
online and the Library has licensed online access for the School of Medicine
from the publisher, then in many cases you will see a option labeled "full-text" next
to the article's citation in the Bibliography. Clicking on this link
will take you to the article on the publisher's site. Because access
under these licenses is controlled by IP address, these links may not work
from computers outside the Dental Center.
The Library makes a wealth of full-text medical literature resources available
through the Library's
homepage.
- What are "Key Papers"?
Faculty may choose to have particularly significant or characteristic publications
marked as "key papers." "Key papers" are starred in the Bibliography so that a user
may quickly identify publications that the author feels are the most important. The
Library strongly urges that faculty limit themselves to no more than 5 "key papers."
- Can I get statistical data from the Faculty Bibliography?
Yes. Both
general and
departmental statistical reports are available.
If you have a specific statistical question that you need answered,
please contact the
Faculty Bibliography Administrator to discuss the possibility of a
customized statistical report.
- Warning! Incomplete data!
Statistics derived from the Faculty Bibliography are only as good as the
underlying data. At present the Bibliography is definitely incomplete.
Some faculty have quite complete listings while others have
few or none of their publications included. When using the Bibliography for
statistical or other comparisons, please bear in mind that actual data may
not be valid for all comparisons.
The Library's objective is a truly comprehensive bibliography. We are continually
working to add citations and otherwise improve the data and its usability.
We encourage all faculty and departments to make every effort to ensure that they
are fully and fairly represented in the Bibliography. The best way to do this at
present is to have individual faculty review their bibliographies and submit additions
and corrections via email at dentallibrary@nyu.edu.
- I have more questions, whom should I contact?
Please direct all questions relating to the Faculty Bibliography
to the Faculty Bibliography Administrator via email at the address:
dentbib@library.med.nyu.edu. If email is not
convenient, please call Hector Perez-Gilbe at (212) 998-9789.
