(from the chapter) The goal of this chapter is to focus on the development of various approaches to neuropsychological assessment as they developed from the larger discipline of psychology in the middle part of the 20th century. Again, there have been a number of excellent summaries of the origins of specific tests and accounts of neuropsychology's pioneers (Boake, 2002; Jones & Butters, 1983; Meier, 1992; Reitan, 1994; Stringer, Cooley, & Christensen, 2002). This chapter will differ from those contributions by emphasizing how early systematic movements in psychology influenced the development of neuropsychological testing as it is practiced today.
