Blood mercury levels of dental students and dentists at a dental school

OBJECTIVE: To determine the blood mercury levels in dental students and clinical teaching staff in a dental school using amalgam as a restorative material. SETTING: A dental school in Ege University, Turkey surveyed during one academic year. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Cross-sectional study of groups of dental students (n=92) in years I to V, clinical teachers in restorative dentistry (n=16) and controls (n=14). Mercury concentration was estimated in venous blood samples using a cold vapour atomic absorption method at the commencement and end of the academic year. Daily air mercury levels were determined in clinical and teaching areas by measuring the darkening of palladium chloride discs using spectrophotometry. RESULTS: There were statistically significant increases (p<0.001) in plasma mercury concentration between measurements in all groups at the end of the academic year. Red cell mercury levels were also consistently elevated. Although the highest levels of mercury were recorded in persons working with amalgam, increased levels were also found in subjects working in the teaching classrooms but not with amalgam (controls and first year students). CONCLUSION: Increased mercury levels appeared to be due to background exposure from spillage of mercury and amalgam residues on floors. Increased mercury hygiene and regular control of working atmosphere should be implemented to prevent mercury exposure in the dental pre-clinical laboratory

An evaluation of resin-ionomers to prevent coronal microleakage in endodontically treated teeth

While a gutta-percha system is most commonly used by practitioners for canal obturation, there is no agreement on how best to close the chamber of an endodontically treated tooth. Some materials used in restorative dentistry may have endodontic applications. Restorative materials of particular interest to endodontists are those used as subgingival restorations. Their properties include insolubility in oral fluids, adhesiveness, dual-cure capabilities, radiopacity, hardness and fluoride release, low cure shrinkage and a low coefficient of thermal expansion. The purpose of this in vitro study was to test three products that could be used to seal pulp chambers of endodontically treated teeth to prevent bacterial infiltration. A bacteriological assay system was used to determine the efficacy of three commercially available restorative materials to prevent penetration of Streptococcus salivarius from the pulp chambers into the prepared canals. The materials evaluated were: Geristore two-paste system with Tenure Quik with fluoride, Dispersalloy with Tenure Quik with fluoride, and Marathon posterior composite with Tenure Quik with fluoride. During the sixty days of the study, the analysis indicated that the Geristore two-paste system with Tenure Quik with fluoride provided a statistically significant improved seal when compared to the Marathon posterior composite and Dispersalloy amalgam with Tenure Quik with fluoride

Microleakage of Class V restorations using two different compomer systems: an in vitro study

This study compared the marginal microleakage of Class V cavities restored with Dyract-AP and F2000. Forty Class V cavity preparations were performed on extracted human teeth. As a negative control, twenty teeth were used without Class V preparations. The apical foramina of the teeth were sealed with a layer of varnish and amalgam restorations. Class V cavity preparations with occlusal margins in enamel, and gingival margins in cementum or dentin that measured approximately three millimeters in width (gingival-occlusal) and length (mesial-distal), were prepared on the buccal surface of the teeth. Samples were divided randomly into 2 groups of 15, and restored per manufacturer's instructions using experimental primer/conditioner (PCC, D/C) and Single Bond Adhesive (3M). All restorations were polished with an abrasive finishing kit. After storage in 37 degrees C water for 24 hours, all specimens were thermocycled between 5 degrees C and 55 degrees C for 500 cycles with a 30-second dwell time, followed by immersion in 0.2% basic fucsine for 24 hours. Teeth were then embedded in cold cure acrylic resin, sectioned longitudinally, and the dye penetration at the enamel and cementum margins were scored at 30x magnification. Evaluations were rated from 0 to 3 (0 = no leakage; 1 = dye penetration up to one-half of the preparation depth; 2 = dye penetration more than one-half preparation depth, but less than the axial wall; 3 = dye penetration along the axial wall). Both F-2000 and Dyract-AP indicated no leakage in the enamel margins. Dyract-AP showed no leakage at either the enamel or dentin margins. Fisher's Exact Test revealed that this difference in dentin margins was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Under the given conditions, Dyract-AP and F-2000 demonstrated resistance to microleakage in enamel, and showed Dyract-AP to be more resistant to microleakage in dentin than F-2000
