New possibilities of using orthopantomograms and dental and hard palate casts for personal identification

Kazandjian, G K; Romodanovsky, P O; Bisharyan, M S; Barinov, E K
There were carried out anthropometric investigations (n=460), radiological investigations of facial skull (n=150), and studied stone casts, as well as hard palate mucosal imprints (n=160) of Armenian unidentified dead bodies to determine anatomic and morphological features of dentition in order to use the data for personal identification. There were studied anatomic and morphological features of dentition, orthopantomograms, premolar and molar indices obtained when examining stone casts, distribution features of side folds of hard palate mucosa revealed in Armenians. There were determined the most informative clinical, radiographic, and morphological types of dentition anomalies in Armenians. Most informative morphological features of hard palate mucosal relief in Armenian population were revealed

Acupuncture: a unique effort to treat periodontal disease

Schoor, R S; Sussman, H I; Kazandjian, G K
BACKGROUND: Acupuncture, a technique for conscious sedation, was introduced as a modality for pain control in 1958 in the United States. It has been used to treat illnesses in Asia for more than 3,000 years. CASE DESCRIPTION: This case report describes the use of acupuncture as a treatment for periodontal disease as prescribed and administered by a Korean practitioner. The patient was treated in 1991 by the insertion of multiple acupuncture needles in response to a diagnosis of 'gum pain.' Chronic, low-grade discomfort, diagnosed as a symptom of the disease, disappeared after the acupuncture treatment. The patient had minimal professional care in this country since the acupuncture therapy. She had experienced low-grade, but persistent, discomfort over the previous two years. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: The oral diagnosis is moderate to advanced generalized chronic periodontitis with primary occlusal trauma. The present findings tend to implicate parafunction as the etiology for the current pain and perhaps the etiology for the discomfort experienced 10 years ago

Effect of inflammation upon human gingival cyclic AMP metabolism

Fine, A S; Egnor, R W; Kazandjian, G; LaMorte, G; Klonsky, K
The effect of the increasing degree of human gingival inflammation on adenylate cyclase (basal, fluoride stimulated) and low Km and high Km cAMP phosphodiesterase activities were evaluated in separate studies. Human gingival biopsies were classified by the Loe Bleeding Index as mildly, moderately, and markedly inflamed. Basal and F- stimulated adenylate cyclase (cAMP synthesis) activities were found to be unaltered by the increasing degree of inflammation when the data were expressed on either a mg wet wt, or mg protein basis. A significant loss of F- stimulated adenylate cyclase (mg protein) activity was observed in the moderately inflamed group when the data were compared with either the mildly or markedly inflamed groups of tissue. The low Km, and high Km cAMP phosphodiesterase activities (cAMP degradation) were found to be unaffected by gingival inflammation. This suggests that neither cAMP synthesis, nor degradation are stimulated in human gingiva by inflammation

Tetracycline: a clinical study to determine its effectiveness as long-term adjuvant

Scopp, I W; Froum, S J; Sullivan, M; Kazandjian, G; Wank, D; Fine, A
A random double blind crossover study of patients on the effects of tetracycline therapy over a 3-month period revealed that there were no significant differences between the placebo group and tetracycline-treated groups in relation to (1) Gingival Index, (2) Debris Index and (3) Papillary Bleeding. A marked improvement in the Gingival Index occurred after 3 months of treatment in each group resulting from curettage and home care. Papillary bleeding was significantly reduced after 3 months of treatment in the tetracycline group and similar trends were observed in the placebo group. The Debris Index in both experimental and placebo groups showed no significant change after treatment for 3 months. The data suggest that tetracycline therapy does not appreciably after either the Gingival Index, Debris Index, or the Papillary Bleeding Index over a 3-month period

Combined orthodontic-periodontal treatment of an infrabony defect. A case report

Kazandjian, G; Scopp, I W; Stahl, S
A case presentation involving the combined orthodontic-periodontic treatment of a distally inclined mandibular left central incisor with a mesial infrabony defect is reported. Treatment was performed in three phases: (a) the tooth was moved upright (b) periodontal surgery with osseous grafting of the infrabony defect was then performed; and (c) the operative site was reentered 5 months later. The patient was followed and soft and hard tissue changes were documented for 12 months from time of initiation of treatment
