Rusk Dolls Exhibit Highlights Global History of the Institute
The Archives of the NYU School of Medicine has recently installed a new exhibit on the first floor of the Medical Science Building. The exhibit features a selection of dolls from the extensive collection owned by the Rusk Institute for Rehabilitation. Beginning in 1950 with the first gift of a pair of dolls from India news of the tradition quickly spread by word-of-mouth. Soon foreign doctors and therapists who came to train at the Institute and even patients who came to be treated there were bringing dolls. Dressed in costumes native to the country of the donor, the dolls are a vivid and heart-warming illustration of the world-wide influence of the Institute founded by Howard A. Rusk after World War II. The exhibit also highlights the early history of the Institute and the careers of the first two Directors – Howard A. Rusk and Mathew H.M. Lee. The exhibit will be up until the early fall.
