Graphics and Media Area

The library is pleased to announce that the Graphics and Media Area in the alcove off the Main Reading Room is officially up and running. Conveniently located in this area are the equipment and software required for graphic design and digitalization projects; web development and publishing; video conversion and production. The Graphics and Media Area is open during regular library hours including evenings and weekends. NYU Consumer Health Libraries Launch New Web sites

The NYU Consumer Health Libraries have launched new Web sites at nyupatientlibrary.org. Designed to reflect and respond to the health information needs of NYU Langone Medical Center patients, their families and caregivers, as well as patient educators, these Web sites feature selected, organized links to carefully filtered and selected consumer health Web sites.

You may be aware that 80% of internet users have searched for health information online, but did you know that most of them rarely check the date or source of information they find?  A recent study also found that less than half of users can tell the difference between “sponsored” results and unpaid results. Using the NYU Consumer Health Library health topics as a starting point ensures that health information seekers will benefit from the filtering provided by our librarians. Subscribe to the RSS feed of one or all three of the Web sites for continuing updates on what’s new and interesting with patient health at NYU.

CINAHL, the Nursing and Allied Health Database, Moves to a New Vendor

CINAHL, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health, has been purchased by the EBSCO database vendor and will no longer be offered through Ovid.  What does this mean to you?  You will have to learn a new interface.  The good news is that EBSCO has attempted to make a user-friendly interface to meet your needs for systematic searching.  They also provide two value-added resources:  “Evidence-Based Care Sheets” are concise and comprehensive overviews of clinical issues.  Each EBC sheet incorporates the latest evidence, statistics, research and references on a given topic.   “Quick Lessons” provide concise, comprehensive overviews of diseases, syndromes and conditions.  Hands-on classes featuring the new interface are offered:

Library Faculty News

Warmest welcomes to new faculty members Ian Walls and Richard McGowan. Systems Integration Librarian, Ian Walls, who has a dual Master’s degree in Library & Information Science and Computer Science, will develop, customize, and maintain computer programs that will ensure the continued currency and efficiency of library operations. In addition, Ian is Communications Section Chair Elect of the Special Library Association (SLA), IT Division. Ian Walls may be reached at wallsi01@nyumc.org or (212) 263-8687.

Richard McGowan is the library’s new health sciences Research Librarian. He previously worked at the Health Sciences Library at the University of Illinois at Chicago but is actually a native New Yorker. Richard will coordinate research and information support for members of the NYU Medical Center focusing on departmental research needs and priorities. He will provide guidance and training in bibliographic and other research tools. Richard McGowan may be contacted for consultation at richard.mcgowan@nyumc.org or (212) 263-8016. He holds office hours at both Ehrman Medical and Waldmann Dental libraries.

Congratulations to Martin Brennan, Librarian for Medical Education & Curriculum Development, who was recently elected Chair of the Northeast section of Libraries in Medical Education (LiME), a special interest group of the Group on Educational Affairs (GEA) of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). Moreover, Martin was accepted as a Senior Member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP) within the Medical Library Association.

Additional congratulations to Colleen Cuddy, Deputy Director, NYU Health Sciences Libraries, who was elected to the Board of Directors, Library Information and Technology Association (LITA) for a term of three years. Colleen is also Chair-elect of the Medical Informatics Section, Medical Library Association (MLA).
