Ehrman Medical Library Web Site Survey Results

Thank you to all who participated in the library Web site survey! The prodigious response to our survey about the library Web site was exciting—nearly five hundred users answered questions about their use of the library site, their preferences when using the Web, and their ideas for a new site.

Users said that they most liked the access the library provides to electronic resources, especially quick access through the Handy Resources menu. This is a feature that we will expand in the new site. Others cited the ease of getting articles and books through interlibrary loan and the option to request a literature search done by a librarian. Users also mentioned that it can be time-consuming to locate specific titles in long lists of search results. Navigation and filtering are aspects we will focus on in the design of the new site.

Five respondents received Amazon gift certificates in our prize drawing. The Library and Web team are grateful to all of the survey respondents for their time and interest and look forward to unveiling new features and a new look in the coming months.

Find a Researcher

NYU Langone Medical Center has a brand new tool for identifying researchers of biomedical topics:  Find A Researcher. This tool returns a ranked list of NYULMC researchers who use a particular term in their publications or on their public Biosketch page. For example, one could put together a list of researchers using the term “diabetes.”

Find A Researcher is the product of a cooperative effort of the Medical Library and Medical Center IT.  We consider this tool to be version 1.0; new versions with improved data analysis and content will follow in due course. Meanwhile, it’s never been easier to determine areas of faculty expertise and identify colleagues for collaboration.

Celebrate Health Literacy Month and National Medical Librarian’s Month

Filed Under Events, Patient & Family Resource Center

October is Health Literacy Month and the Library is celebrating with a special event.  On October 28, 2008 there will be a screening of the short film, Health literacy and patient safety: Help patients understand. Produced by the AMA the film provides “detailed techniques and specific steps for physicians and their staff on helping patients with limited health literacy.” The film will be introduced by Consumer Health Librarians, Lita Anglin and Sallie Wilcox. The screening is at 12:00 p.m. in the Carlisle Computer Classroom, MSB-198. Please bring your own lunch, beverages and cookies will be provided.

If you cannot attend the screening, feel free to come to the library to view the film at your convenience, a copy is available at the circulation desk or the film can be viewed from any of the libraries’ computers via the AMA Web site. Also, please take time this month to stop by one of our three Consumer Health Libraries to meet with a librarian or pick up materials and patient handouts. Library locations and hours, as well as information on programs that these libraries offer can be found on the newly designed Consumer Health Libraries Web site.

October also marks National Medical Librarian’s Month.  Medical librarians are faculty members of the NYULMC who can help you by providing research assistance and consultation; citation analysis; help finding grants; tailored instruction for students, faculty and staff; patient information; and much more. Please see the display case outside the Library highlighting recent publications of library faculty.
