Clin-eguide provides a value-added online resource, Nursing Advisor, which gives “synoptic reference content for nurses in the areas of drugs, diseases, diagnostic tests, treatments, and signs and symptoms.”

The information contained in Nursing Advisor ic collected from a variety of resources including the Nursing Drug Handbook, Nurse’s 5-Minute Consult, Atlas of Pathophysiology and over 200 care plans based on the NANDA nursing diagnosis. This resource is sure to become a favorite due to its key information regarding assessment, nursing considerations, patient teaching, and a list of references that link back to Clin-eguide.

National Nutrition Month

National Nutrition Month is “a nutrition education and information campaign created annually in March by the American Dietetic Association (ADA)” that focuses on the development and maintenance of healthful eating and exercise habits. UpToDate access expanded!

UpToDate access expanded! The terms of access to UpToDate have recently been revised to allow the resource to be used from any NYU Lagone Medical Center computer. The license had restricted access to particular buildings and areas but now allows this popular clinical resource to be used anywhere at the Medical Center, including NYU computers at Bellevue and the VA.

Please note that remote access (from home, off campus medical offices, etc.) is still unavailable, as is access from the College of Dentistry.

If you have problems with access to UpToDate or other online resources please report them to us using the Ask A Librarian form found on the library’s home page.

PubMed: 2009 Changes

Change is in the air, and the National Library of Medicine (NLM) is not exempt from this sweeping phenomenon with its upcoming changes in the PubMed search interface.The black navigation bar, linking to nucleotide, protein and other databases, is going away. In fact, the new search screen has become “user friendly” as NLM has placed key commands and features on the primary search screen. The search box remains on the top, however, searches can now be conducted in a logical sequence with the option to open or close various windows on the main search page. To begin searching in the Advance mode, log in to PubMed via the NYU Health Sciences Library’s home page, and click on “Advanced Search” at the end of the search bar.

Remember: to always log in from the NYU Health Sciences Libraries home page to retain access to e-journals and print subscriptions, or to access the Interlibrary Loan from for those items that are not in the library’s subscriptions.

TOXNET: Toxicology Data Network

TOXNET is a freely available specialty database provided by the National Library of Medicine focused specifically on environmental and industrial toxicology. The database itself is comprised of smaller, more focused sub-databases covering topics ranging in scope from the toxicity of household products to identification of chemical structures. Users of this resource will find a mix of content including bibliographic citations, test data, reports, maps, as well as consumer focused information.

Friends of the Library of NYU School of Medicine Annual Donation

At their Board of Directors meeting, held on January 8, 2009, the Friends of the Library of NYU School of Medicine generously donated $35,000.00 to Ehrman Medical Library. This annual donation is used to support the library’s collection, in particular to help pay for one of our most popular resources: UpToDate. Thank you Friends of the Library!

Global Library of Women’s Medicine

A new women’s health database has been launched by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in London and is freely available to healthcare professionals looking for “a definitive resource on the latest therapeutic options in women’s medicine.”  Over 650 worldwide experts have contributed to this database.  It is arranged by chapters and subchapters and covers over 442 topics and 53 supplementary subchapters.  With registration, you will gain access to surgical videos, color atlases, information on laboratory tests and their significance, and patient information handouts.  Take a moment and visit this new and exciting resource — click here.  

Google Scholar

Google Scholar is a time-saving, scholarly search interface accessible from within the Google interface. With Google Scholar, you can conduct searches with better precision, search across several biomedical and scientific disciplines, and access peer-reviewed journal articles, books and book sections.  In addition, you can link to the NYU Health Sciences e-resources to retrieve full-text or link to the interlibrary loan form to order an article or book that the library does not own.  You can also import the citations into EndNote or RefWorks.

Faculty Publications

The Faculty Bibliography, providing information on over 100,000 publications of NYU Langone Medical Center faculty, offers an easy solution for faculty members who want a comprehensive list of their publications and available impact factors of the journals in which they publish. To view your publications simply connect to the Faculty Bibliography and search by author. Results are displayed with full citations and include abstracts and links to full-text articles when available. From within your list of publications, click on the link “Summary of publishing activity” to view your publishing history, including the impact factor of the journals in which you have published. Currently, data on impact factor goes back 10 years and includes publications up to the year 2008/09.
