- WISER
WISER is a system designed by the National Library of Medicine to assist first responders in hazardous material incidents. WISER provides a wide range of information on hazardous substances, including substance identification support, physical characteristics, human health information, and containment and suppression advice. Free.
- Mobile REMM
Mobile REMM is available for Blackberry, Windows Mobile, and Palm OS and offers a selection of the most important files from REMM. Radiation Event Medical Management is designed by the National Library of Medicine to provide information to health care providers, primarily physicians, in a variety of formats: on the web, on mobile devices, and through a downloadable version that can be used in situations with no internet connectivity. REMM aims to help users act in a radiation emergency even without formal radation medicine training. Free.
- Antibiotic Guide
A service of Johns Hopkins Point of Care Information Technology. Includes antibiotic recommendations for a wide range of conditions, including those caused by a bioterrorist attack. Also includes a PDA download center; applications work with a variety of devices. Free. Registration required.
- Bioterrorism Decision Support Tools
A suite of decision support tools about how to treat smallpox, inhalation anthrax, and cutaneous anthrax, as well as for the detection and basic management of chemical agents of terrorism. Also included are numerous documents, such as the ACP guides to identifying bioterrorism and chemical terrorism. The decison support tools only work with Palm devices, but documents work with Palm and Pocket PC. Free.
- Bioterrorism Fact Sheet PDA Downloads
Part of the suite of "Quick Reference Material" produced by St. Louis University's Center for the Study of Bioterrorism. The PDA portion of the reference material includes a series of clinical fact sheets about the diagnosis and treatment of exposure to various chemical agents. This product only works with Palm devices. Free.

One means of keeping current about medical literature and healthcare news.
Subscribers select "channels" for the type of content they would like to monitor. One channel is for Infectious Diseases. This product works with Palm and Pocket PC devices. Free. Registration required.
- Resource Guide for Public Health Preparedness
Database maintained by the New York Academy of Medicine. Provides access to various types of documents pertaining to public health preparedness, such as executive summaries, fact sheets, and glossaries. The “Advanced” option allows you to search the database by document type, intended audience, or “event category,” which includes biological or nuclear attacks. Every search result links directly to a resource.
- HazLit
Database maintained by the University of Colorado’s Natural Hazards Center Library. Provides access to books, journals and reports about how societies prepare for and respond to natural hazards and catastrophic events. Can search by title, author, keyword, call #, or year published. Search results provide bibliographic information, but do not link directly to a resource. Please contact Ehrman Library’s Document Delivery Service department to request items cited in this database.
- QUAKELINE
Database maintained by the University of Buffalo’s Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research. Contains approximately 40,000 records for journal articles, conference papers, technical reports, maps and videotapes about earthquakes, earthquake engineering and natural hazard mitigation. Possible to search by title, author, keyword, or “word anywhere” in the record. Can download search results or email them to yourself. Search results provide bibliographic information, but do not link directly to a resource. Please contact Ehrman Library’s Document Delivery Service department to request items cited in this database.
- Disaster Database
Database maintained by the Regional Disaster Information Center for Latin America and the Caribbean, with content about all aspects of disaster management in the region. Main searching interface is available in English and Spanish, but search results are in Spanish. Provides basic or advanced searching options, and currently contains over 15,000 records to books, book chapters, technical reports and conference proceedings. Some search results provide direct links to the resource.
- TOXNET
Cluster of databases maintained by the National Library of Medicine’s Division of Specialized Information Services. A total of ten (10) databases that provide information on various aspects of toxicology hazard identification. Can search databases individually or all at once.
- Disaster Prevention & Management
Available through the Library’s e-resources page, from 1995-present. Upon entering the journal’s web page, you can browse through the issues or search for specific articles. If desired, you can limit your search to full-text articles only. Articles are available in HTML or PDF formats.
- Disaster Prevention & Management: An International Journal
Available through the Library’s e-resources page. Contains abstracts to articles from 1992-present, and full text of articles from 1994-present. Journal supports “the exchange of ideas, experience and practice between academics, practitioners and policy makers.” Full-text article available in HTML or PDF formats. Many journal issues contain an “On the Web” listing of relevant Internet resources.
- Journal of Prehospital and Disaster Medicine
The official journal of the World Association for Disaster Medicine and the Nordic Society for Disaster Medicine. Focuses on both hospital and non-hospital environments. Two most recent issues are only available to subscribers, but older issues are available for free. Publishes original research, special reports, comprehensive reviews, case reports and brief reports about emergency medical care, disaster medicine, and public health and safety. The web site for the journal also serves as a clearinghouse for a variety of topics for information in these fields.
- Biosecurity and Bioterrorism: Biodefense Strategy, Practice, and Science
Journal is indexed by MEDLINE, and provides “an international forum for debate and exploration of the many key strategic, scientific, and operational issues posed by biological weapons and bioterrorism.” Full-text articles are available through the NYU Medical Center network. The web site offers full-text searching of journal articles, as well as a Table of Contents alerting service.
- Biosecurity Bulletin
Free newsletter produced by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s Center for Biosecurity. Articles are in PDF format only, so you must install Adobe Acrobat Reader. There is no full text searching capability for the newsletter. The web site also serves as a clearinghouse for information about bioterrorist agents along with additional resources.
- JAMA & Archives Bioterrorism Pages
Available through the NYU Medical Center network, this is a collection of almost 200 articles about bioterrorism that have appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association from 1997-2005. Includes letters, news, brief reports, and articles. Listings are arranged in reverse chronological order, and there is no way to search the collection as a group. Each listing contains both an abstract or extract of the piece, and the full text.
- Emerging Infectious Diseases
Monthly publication of the National Center for Infectious Diseases, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Site requires Adobe Acrobat Reader. Published both in print and online, and online version offers an “ahead of print” section. Can search by title, keyword, or anywhere within the text of an article. Although this journal is not focused exclusively on bioterrorism, coverage of different aspects of this topic appears very frequently.
The Virtual Naval Hospital (http://www.vnh.org/) has developed many electronic textbooks about how to respond to incidents of bioterrorism. A sampling of these works:
- Defense Against Toxin Weapons
Although primarily intended for military personnel, this work is also “of interest to individuals charged with countering domestic and international terrorism.” It is a manual of methods for defending against the effects of ordinary toxins; mass casualty biological toxins; and “militarily significant” weapons. Section headings include “Understanding the Threat,” “Countermeasures,” “Answers to Often-asked Questions,” and “The Future.” Can view the manual online or download it as a PDF file.
- Medical Management of Biological Casualties Handbook
A “pocket-sized” overview about the “prophylaxis and management of biological casualties.” Began publishing in 1993, and is currently in its fourth edition. This is the textbook for both in-person and satellite broadcasts about the management of biological casualties. Contains information about detection of numerous biological agents, biological toxins, and viral toxins. Also discusses decontamination and personal protection.

- NYULMC Center for Health Information Preparedness
Web site for NYULMC's Center for Health Information Preparedness, which has coordinated several Medical Center projects since 2004. Some projects are completed, and some are ongoing. Includes an award-winning online course about psychosocial aspects of terrorism; a suite of online courses in disaster medicine; and information about NYU's Large Scale Emergency Readiness (LaSER) project. Parts of the site require a log in.
- Federal Emergency Management Agency
Federal agency responsible for coordinating the response to large disasters, both natural and intentional. The site is divided into five major subject categories listed in a banner at the top: Disaster Communities; Emergency Personnel; Education & Training; News Media; and Regions. Each category contains numerous links to various parts of the web site. There are also numerous links in the left column of the web site. It is best to navigate through either of these locations, rather than using the sub-par site search option.
- Emergency Preparedness & Response: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
The CDC is the US federal government’s principal public health agency. This web page gathers CDC materials about response to both natural and man-made disasters. It also includes news items, as well as information about emergency preparedness for businesses and children. Major topic categories for the site are: Bioterrorism Agents; Chemical Emergencies; Radiation Emergencies; Mass Trauma; Natural Disasters; and Recent Outbreaks & Incidents.
- REMM

- Preparedness for Deliberate Epidemics: World Health Organization
Location for the World Health Organization’s (WHO) resources about responses to man-made disasters. Includes up-to-date information about disease outbreaks, as well as health information for travelers. Includes a 2004 edition of the Public Health Response to Biological and Chemical Weapons.
- Biodefense Education
A portal to readings, online courses, and textbooks, this site serves as a “source of continuing education about biodefense affairs.” Also contains news items and a discussion board. The site’s is searchable, and contains links to additional resources.
- American Veterinary Medical Association: Disaster preparedness and response
Collection of open-access articles on policy, preparedness, the veterinarian's role, and search-and-rescue dogs.
- ProMED-mail
Supported by the International Society for Infectious Diseases, ProMED is the global electronic reporting system for outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases and toxins. This is a moderated list open to anyone, which has over 30,000 subscribers. Subscription options include receiving individual e-mails or a digest version; postings also appear online immediately.
