- PubMed (National Library of Medicine)
The interface to the MEDLINE database designed by the National Library of Medicine. MEDLINE is the premier database for the biomedical sciences, containing over 17 million records. PubMed’s best EBM tool is "Clinical Queries" filters to identify reports of clinical evidence on therapy, diagnosis, etiology, or prognosis questions. Based on research by R. Brian Haynes and his colleagues at McMaster University, Clinical Queries are built for the busy clinician who does not have time to construct custom filtering searches, yet need a reliable way to apply a clinical focus.
- Clin-eguide
A dynamic one-stop searching tool for some of the best EBM resources:
- Clin-eguide’s own Evidence-Based Guidelines
- Fulltext Textbooks (33 titles as of June ’08)
- Ovid’s EBMReviews
- Cochrane Systematic Reviews
- DARE (Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects)
- ACP Journal Club
- Facts & Comparisons Drug Information
- MEDLINE 1996-present
- National Guideline Clearinghouse
- Nursing Advisor
- Patient Handouts
- The Ovid Databases
(NYU Community)
Search any of the databases below individually, or up to four at one time. Note, many of these tools are included in Clin-eguide above. But Ovid contains many more options as well, including the following databases particularly focused upon EBM:
- ACP Journal Club - Full Text
Contains both abstracts and expert commentaries from the fields of internal medicine, family practice, pediatrics, psychiatry, surgery and obstetrics & gynecology.
- Cochrane Database of Systematic Review - Full Text
Includes the full text of the regularly updated systematic reviews of the effects of healthcare prepared by The Cochrane Collaboration. The reviews are presented in two types: completed reviews and protocols (topics in the process of being reviewed).
- Database of Abstracts of Effectiveness - Full Text
Contains critical assessments of systematic reviews from a variety of medical journals. DARE records cover topics such as diagnosis, prevention, rehabilitation, screening, and treatment.
- Cochrane Controlled Trials Registry
Includes the database records of controlled trials studied to produce the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and Database of Abstracts of Effectiveness.
- Cochrane Methodology Register
The Cochrane Methodology Register is a database of studies relevant to the methods of systematic reviews of healthcare and social interventions. The database includes journal articles, book chapters, conference proceedings, conference abstracts and reports of ongoing methodological research.
- Embase
The Excerpta Medica database (EMBASE) produced by Elsevier, is a major biomedical and pharmaceutical database indexing over 3,500 international journals in the following fields: drug research, pharmacology, pharmaceutics, toxicology, clinical and experimental human medicine, health policy and management, public health, occupational health, environmental health, drug dependence and abuse, psychiatry, forensic medicine, and biomedical engineering/instrumentation. There is selective coverage for nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, psychology, and alternative medicine.
- Biological Abstracts
Biological Abstracts® encompasses the entire field of life sciences and provides comprehensive coverage of the world’s published biological and biomedical research. This includes traditional areas of biology, such as botany, zoology and microbiology, as well as experimental, clinical and veterinary medicine, biotechnology, environmental studies, and agriculture. Interdisciplinary fields such as biochemistry, biophysics and bioengineering are also included.
- NHS Economic Evaluation Database
The National Health Service (NHS) Economic Evaluation Database provides cost-benefit analyses about healthcare interventions, and contains over 6000 abstracts of quality assessed economic evaluations. The database aims to assist decision-makers by systematically identifying and describing economic evaluations, appraising their quality and highlighting their relative strengths and weaknesses.
- Health Technology Assessment
This database brings together details on ongoing health technology assessments, including systematic reviews and ongoing and completed research based on trials, questionnaires and economic evaluations.
- Cochrane Library
(NYU community)
A strong resource for questions of therapy, the Cochrane Library contains the following: Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR), Database of Abstracts of Effectiveness (DARE), and Cochrane Controlled Trials Register (CCTR). Plus: Health Technology Assessment Database (HTA), NHS Economic Evaluation Database (abstracts of economic evaluations of healthcare interventions), The Cochrane Database of Methodology Reviews and The Cochrane Methodology Register.
- PIER
PIER is a Web-based decision-support tool designed for rapid point-of-care delivery of up-to-date, evidence-based guidance for clinicians. PIER is a collection of modules divided into five topic types: Diseases, Screening and Prevention, Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Ethical and Legal Issues, and Procedures.
The disease-based modules are PIER's core. Each module presents a series of succinct guidance statements and practice recommendations, supported by more detailed levels of pertinent rationale and evidence. There are links to abstracts and the full text of carefully selected references; to a comprehensive drug resource; other ACP knowledge resources including its guidelines, MKSAP, Annals of Internal Medicine, ACP Journal Club, and Clinical Evidence; and other resources including PubMed and various Web sites. Tables, figures, algorithms, and video and audio clips are also included. A disease-based module includes the following sections: Prevention, Screening, Diagnosis, Consultation for Diagnosis, Non-drug Therapy, Patient Education, Consultation for Management, Follow-up.
- Clinical Evidence - BMJ - Full Text
(NYU Community)
A compendium of evidence on the effects of common clinical interventions, published by the British Medical Journal Publishing Group. Provides a concise account of the current state of knowledge, ignorance, and uncertainty about the prevention & treatment of a wide range of clinical conditions, based on searches of the literature.
- Natural Standard
Evidence-based information about complementary and alternative therapies designed for clinicians to facilitate patient care decision-making. Validated rating scales are used to evaluate the quality of available evidence. Information is incorporated into comprehensive monographs which are designed to facilitate clinical decision making. All monographs undergo blinded editorial and peer review prior to inclusion in Natural Standard databases.
- TRIP Database - Turning Research into Practice
TRIP brings together the key evidence-based healthcare resources available on the Internet. Eight major categories are searched by the TRIP search engine: Evidence based, guidelines, general peer-reviewed journals, query-answering services, specialist peer-reviewed journals, e-textbooks, medical images and patient information leaflets. The Evidence-based category covers 32 major resources including the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, Clinical Evidence, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness.
