- The Leapfrog Group
The Leapfrog Group is an initiative driven by organizations that buy health care who are working to initiate breakthrough improvements in the safety, quality and affordability of healthcare for Americans. It is a voluntary program aimed at mobilizing employer purchasing power to alert America ’s health industry that big leaps in health care safety, quality and customer value will be recognized and rewarded. The Leapfrog Group was founded by a small group of large employers, initially supported by the Business Roundtable (BRT) and launched in November 2000. Leapfrog is supported by the BRT, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Leapfrog members and others.
- Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services
Formerly named the Health Care Financing Administration(HCFA), CMS oversees the operation of Medicare, Medicaid, and the CHIP. It is also responsible for implementing the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments and various provisions of HIPAA. Medicaid, is a joint federal-state program, which provides health care services to Americans with low incomes. Medicaid is an entitlement, whose eligibility standards and payment rates for medical care are decided at the state level. Medicaid in 2001 covered only about 40 percent of those with incomes under the federal poverty line. Medicare is a federal program, signed into law in 1965 by President Lyndon Johnson, which provides health care services to elderly and disabled Americans. As part of the 1997 Balanced Budget Act, Congress beefed up preventive coverage.
- Department of Health and Human Services
HHS oversees federal health agencies and programs, including NIH, CDC, and Medicare and Medicaid. Officially created in 1980, HHS is the umbrella organization representing, eight research and health delivery agencies, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It has the largest budget of any agency of the federal government, and is also the federal government’s largest grant-making agency. National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the nation’s preeminent biomedical research institution with nineteen separate institutes.

- Alliance for Health Reform
A nonpartisan think tank that produces publications and holds briefings on a variety of health policy issues currently before Congress and the nation.
- Center for Budget and Policy Priorities
This center conducts research on health, welfare, and tax issues.
- National Committee for Quality Assurance
NCQA develops standards for and accredits managed care organizations.
- Agency for Health Care Research and Quality (AHRQ)
Pronounced ARC, this agency leads federal efforts to address health services research by university affiliated researchers, medical errors and patient safety. This agency created 12 evidence based practice centers to try and determine which interventions are most effective.
- The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
The largest of the health policy philanthropies based in Princeton , NJ .
- American Health Care Association
This interest group represents the long-term care community including: nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and “subacute” care providers.
- American Hospital Association
The AHA represents approximately five thousand community hospitals and health networks in the US .
- Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)
This body sets the standard for the nation’s 7,400 medical residency programs in each of the 26 recognized medical specialties. Standards for each speciality are updated approximately every 5 years to account for new discoveries, techniques, and changes in practice patterns.
- American Association of Health Plans (AAHP)
This is the leading organization representing the managed care industry. Members include HMO’s, PPO’s, and other network-based plans.
- American Medical Assocation (AMA)
Founded in 1847, the organization represents less than half of the nations’ medical doctors.
