The NYU Health Sciences Libraries offer classes on the efficient use of information resources and management. Classes are free, but open only to staff, faculty, and students of the NYU Medical Center, Dental School, Bellevue, and other affiliates. To determine if you are eligible, consult our access chart; those with “onsite access” can enroll in our courses.  Most classes are held in MSB-198, the Carlisle Computer Classroom (CCC) at Ehrman Medical Library, but some are offered at our Dental and Bellevue locations.

Keeping Up: Skills & Strategies

Consumer Health Information Resources:  Enhancing Patient Education and Promoting Health Literacy
How can you enhance your patient education efforts? How can you help your patients better understand their illness and the steps needed to comply with treatment?  This class will demonstrate reliable patient education electronic resources and give you the skills to find and identify materials written in plain language that patients can comprehend. Sources for finding materials in languages other than English will be covered. You will also learn about patient education resources available to you at NYU Medical Center.

Disaster Preparedness and Bioterrorism Resources
NYUMC students, staff, and faculty can all benefit from a better understanding of how to identify resources useful in planning for and formulating appropriate responses to natural and man-made disasters.  However, the numerous information resources available can be overwhelming.  This class offers a focused and practical introduction to the most critical resources in this area, both on the web and for your handheld, as well as an overview of the work of NYU’s Center for Health Information Preparedness (CHIP).

Finding Clinical Info at Bellevue Hospital Center - NEW!
This hands-on class is intended to develop clinical information searching skills and explore ClinicalResource@OVID and My NCBI. Attendees will be shown how to  access and search ClinicalResource@Ovid and e-journals available at Bellevue Medical Library through the National Library of Medicine's My NCBI and use special features in PubMed including: related articles and clinical queries. The instructor will demonstrate online searching and attendees will learn to fully utilize the features of current licensed databases to search effectively in the hospital.

Ovid Databases

Ovid provides access to a variety of databases via a single search interface. Users are encouraged to take as many classes as they would like, however, it is only necessary to take one Ovid database class to learn the basics of searching in Ovid. The Library encourages you to sign up for the Ovid database class that is most useful to you, but in the event that a class is full, you should feel free to substitute another Ovid class to learn the basics of searching

CINAHL (via Ovid): Nursing & Allied Health Literature
CINAHL includes citations to English language nursing journals, publications of the American Nurse's Association, the National League for Nursing, and primary journals in allied disciplines such as Cardiopulmonary Technology, Emergency Services, Health Education, Med/Lab Technology, Medical Assistance, Medical Records, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Radiology Technology, Respiratory Therapy, Social Science, Surgical Technology, and the Physician's Assistant.

EMBASE (via Ovid): The Other MEDLINE
EMBASE is a major biomedical and pharmaceutical database indexing over 3,500 international journals.  Some of its major subject strengths include drugs, alternative medicine, psychiatry, forensics, orthopedics and European publications that complement MEDLINE. No comprehensive search of the biomedical literature is complete without an EMBASE search!

MEDLINE is the primary source for information from the biomedical journal literature with over 16 million references. Over 4,300 selected journals from 1966 to date are covered. The class will focus on: basic searching using Medical Subject Headings; Explode, Focus and Limit Commands; combine sets using the AND/NOT commands; how to apply limits and filters to refine your search for age groups, trials and other categories; linking to full text articles from Ovid and what to do if they are not there.

Web of Science: Citation Searching and More
Web of Science is the "who's citing who" of science and medicine. Find out how often, by whom, and where your publications and those of your colleagues are cited in the literature. From the basic sciences through clinical medicine learn how to use the unique and powerful features of this important resource. This class also covers using Journal Citation Reports , a comprehensive and unique resource tool for journal evaluation, using citation data drawn from over 8,400 journals from over 3,000 publishers worldwide. The JCR is the only source of citation data on journals, and includes virtually all specialties in the areas of science, technology, and social sciences. The JCR lists the highest impact journals, most frequently used journals, hottest journals and the largest journals.

Find it difficult to remember countless journal style formats? EndNote provides the answer to these and other "publication" problems. Get hands-on experience downloading citations from databases and transferring them into an EndNote database.
