Saving Files to a CD (CD Burning) - PC

Printing?
Use the PDF Version

In the Library's main reading room, several computers have a CDRW drive, otherwise known as a CD burner. You may use one of two types of CDs:

Before saving to a CD, be sure to save your work . To make your file easy to find, you may save it in the shared folder on the desktop just before copying to the CD.

  1. After saving your file, open Roxio Easy CD Creator from the Start Menu. From Applications, select Easy CD Creator.
  2. Make sure that the title bar of the screen says “Untitled Data CD Project.” If it says Music project, choose File—New CD Project—Data CD.
  3. Select the location of your file to copy. For example, choose Desktop if that is where you saved the file.
  4. Click once on the file you want to copy.
  5. Click the Add button with the small down arrow.
  6. Continue doing this until you have added all of the files that you want on this CD.
  7. You can rename the CD by right clicking on the CD number, and choosing Rename.
  8. Insert your CD in the CDRW drive.
  9. Click on Record.
  10. Choose Start Recording from the pop-up box.
  11. Depending on the size of the file(s), it may take several minutes to burn the CD.
  12. When recording is finished, be sure to remove the CD.

Please note that all files are automatically saved as read-only when burned onto a CDR or CDRW.

Alternate Way to Save to a CDRW

To use a CD in the same way you would use a floppy, a CDRW disc may be formatted, and files are saved on the disc instead of permanently burned onto the disc.

Before saving to a CD, be sure to save your work . To make your file easy to find, you may save it in the shared folder on the desktop just before copying to the CD.

  1. After saving your file, open Roxio Easy CD Creator from the Start Menu. From Applications, select DirectCD Format Utility.
  2. Insert your CDRW in the CDRW drive.
  3. Click “Format CD.”
  4. You will have the opportunity to name the CDRW—this is optional
  5. Click “Start Format.”
  6. It normally takes 25-45 minutes to format the CDRW.
  7. Now you can use your CDRW disc just like a floppy disc—add, modify, and delete files.
