Using the Infrared Port in the Library

Palm Organizers with OS 3.3 or greater installed, that have already been locally synchronized to a partner computer, can use the infrared port in the library to download software, update their web-based programs such as AvantGo and ePocrates, and sync their PDA.

Essential First Steps—Setup

In the Home (All) menu on your Palm,
click on the Prefs icon.

In the upper right corner click the down-arrow for the Prefs pull-down menu and make the following changes:

Connection : IR to a PC/Handheld
Network : Choose any service except Windows RAS
User Name: leave blank
Password: leave blank
Connection: IR to a PC/Handheld

After setup is complete, you can update Web-based programs and download software.


Updating Web-Based Programs

You must set up personal accounts with AvantGo and/or ePocrates and install the software on your PDA before using the Clarinet IR port to update the programs.

ePocrates AutoUpdate
In the Home (All) menu click on the AutoUpdate icon.

Click on Modem Sync

Verify the correct server settings
Server: ePocrates Server
Server Address: sync6.epocrates.com
Port: 80
Enter your ePocrates user name and password


AvantGo Syncing
In the Home (All) menu click on the
AGConnect icon

Make sure Update During Next Sync is checked.

Click on Sync this Server

Verify the correct server settings
Server Address: sync.avantgo.com
Port: 80
Enter your AvantGo user name and password





Downloading Software

Selected medical applications (freeware) can be downloaded through the Clarinet IR Port. The computer near the Clarinet device is dedicated for this purpose.



Sync your PDA via the Network

Essential First Steps—Setup

1. Before using the IR port to sync to your computer on the NYU network :

On your computer (the computer where your cradle is physically attached):

2. In the Home (All) menu on your Palm, click on the Prefs icon . In the upper right corner click the down-arrow for the Prefs pull-down menu and make the following changes:

Connection : IR to a PC/Handheld
Network : Choose any service except Windows RAS
User Name: leave blank
Password: leave blank
Connection: IR to a PC/Handheld

After setup is complete, you can update Web-based programs and download software.

3. In the Home (All) menu, click the HotSync icon and choose the Modem option. The name of your connection service will appear directly below the HotSync graphic. Disregard any phone number entry. Click the Option List button (bottom-left button on the bottom panel or tap on the word HotSync in the upper left corner). Change as follows:

Modem Sync Prefs : Network
LANSync Prefs : LANSync
Primary PC Setup
: Enter the IP address and subnet assigned to the partner computer.
Connection Setup : IR to a PC/Handheld
After setup is complete, you can update Web-based programs, sync with a networked computer, or download software.


Syncing with your networked computer
Point the Palm's infrared port toward the Clarinet IR Port and tap the HotSync icon.

Synchronization should take place . If not, ensure that you have chosen Modem and that the service listed corresponds with the one you chose in the step 1 above.

To sync at your computer with your cradle at any time simply choose the Local option and sync. No other changes have to be made . To sync via infrared just choose Modem again.
