Friends of the Library Letter, March 2007

Dear Friend,

As the School looks to the beginning of a new phase in its long history, our library is embarking on a series of changes as well. This year the Ehrman Library was awarded a contract by NIH’s National Library of Medicine to become one of eight regional centers for health information access and outreach programs, and in addition is a key partner on a National Library of Medicine planning grant for using information technology in cancer education.

Within NYU, our library has increased its depth of services to the community through the management of three patient and family libraries in the hospital, the 34th Street Cancer Center, and in the new Hassenfeld Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders. The library staff continues to build new partnerships to integrate scholarly knowledge into the curriculum and into clinical practice, and to teach information management skills throughout the Medical Center. The library facility is still under improvement and, with the completion of the Smilow Project, we will have improved study space. The School approved a capital proposal to upgrade the library public computers and purchase new study chairs, which has made a positive impact on student use. Most notable, however, the staff remains creative and dedicated to providing the best service and collection possible.

As a member of the Friends of the Library, you have contributed to this success and service by allowing the Library to stretch its budget and ensure that its electronic resources include the medical information that provides the best evidence and promotes quality of care. Despite three years of flat budgets, the library has been able to remain relatively stable in its collection by canceling print materials in favor of electronic only.  In 2007 the opportunity to realize such savings from cancellations will be completed, and the library will once again face the effects of a 10% yearly inflation rate for journals and texts, whatever the format.

As you consider your donor support for the Friends of the Library, I would like to thank you for helping to make a positive difference in the success of our Library and thus the mission  of the school in past years, and hope you will continue to do so this year.

If you are planning to attend this year’s Alumni Day on April 14 you are cordially invited to attend the Friends Annual Meeting, which will be held from 12:30-1:30 in Smilow Room 100A, at the end of the first floor hallway. We hope to see many of you there.

Sincerely,

Steven R. Goldstein, MD ‘75
President
