Saturday, April 14, 2007 at 12:30 PM
Smilow Room 100A
Present: Steven Goldstein, President; Karen Brewer, Secretary/Treasurer; Alan Horland, Kenneth Noble, Melvin Hershkowitz, Perry Berg, Paul Gabriel, Danny Danilowicz
The meeting was called to order at 12:30 pm by Steven Goldstein, President. Recognition of the mailed proxies and quorum was indicated by Dr. Brewer, who also reviewed the minutes of the 2006 meeting.
Dr. Brewer reviewed the activities of the Friends and the library in the past year. The library is at present recruiting a candidate for a new position, Deputy Director. One of the primary responsibities of this position will be to work with the Friends of the Library group to increase their visibility within the medical center community. The library ranks in the top ten of medical school libraries in almost all measures except space. It is very actively involved as a partner in many projects within the institution. Some construction is occurring due to recovery from the impact of the Smilow building. The Alumni Digital Library has about 1,000 accesses per month and 300 members.
The treasurer's report revealed that as of the meeting date the total in the various accounts of the Friends was $80,393, with $41,000 of that committed to a donation toward the subscription to UpToDate, and $6,000 toward purchase of lounge chairs when the renovation is completed.
The membership then unanimously elected the board for 2007. They are Steve Goldstein, President; Arthur Zitrin, Vice President; Karen Brewer, Secretary and Treasurer; and members at large Perry Berg, Robin Freedberg, Paul Gabriel, Melvin Hershkowitz, Edwin Kolodny, Vivan Lee, Benard Levine, Arthur Lindner, Richard Nachtigall, Kenneth Noble, and Lawrence Weisbrod.
Under new business, the membership discussed the relationship between the National Assembly Technology Committee and the Friends, and their hope to be involved in any history projects started by incoming Dean Robert Grossman. They also suggested that Dr. Brewer seek to be on the speakers program about evidence based medicine and new technologies in support of it, and recommended there be a hands-on workshop for using the ADL on Friday night of Alumni Day weekend, before the dinners (3-5) or 4pm on Saturday.
There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 1:15.
