There are 8 regional medical libraries in the National Network / Libraries
of Medicine. Libraries compete for the privilege of serving the National Library of Medicine, network member libraries and health professionals in each region. Since 1969, the Regional Medical Library for our region - Delaware , New Jersey , New York and Pennsylvania – has been the New York Academy of Medicine.

This year the health sciences libraries of New York University are competing to be the Regional Medical Library for 2006-2011.

Our Director

Karen Brewer, PhD
Dr. Brewer has worked in health sciences libraries since 1961 and at NYU since 1988. Her management style at NYU is marked by a collaborative, team approach, involving staff from all parts of the libraries in decision-making and projects. Some of her achievements are:
  • In 2002, a collaborative team of Document Delivery Staff and the Library Medical Informatics Group developed a free, shareable document delivery system called Simple Document Delivery System. Used in several libraries throughout the region, the SDDS offers its users an alternative to more expensive commercial ILL systems.

  • In 2003, she chaired the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries task force, Charting the Future and produced the report, Building on Success: Charting the Future of Knowledge Management within the Academic Health Center.

  • In 2004, she joined the Advisory Group of NYU’s Public Health master’s program led by the Oxford-recruited researcher Karen Day. The Public Health program will be interdisciplinary and focus on global health.

Why NYU?

  • We share many of the same struggles that you – and other health sciences libraries – have
    • Managing electronic resources
    • Sharing of resources with affiliated libraries
    • Grappling with the digital divide occurring in our hospitals among affiliated and non-affiliated staff
    • Reaching remote users
    • Proving our worth to administration

  • We know how to listen and communicate and we work at it daily
    • We use teams to manage our libraries and work constantly at communication
    • Work with our own users takes us from Manhattan to Wyoming

  • Working with you and others we can make a difference
