Batch Loading of MARC MeSH Authority Records
into an Innopac OPAC:
Sample Procedures

4/22/98, rev. 12/30/99

  1. Innopac First Time Use Report

New MeSH headings are reported in the Innopac First Time Use report. This report is run approximately every two weeks.

    1. From Innopac, run the First Time Use Report and print it to File Save, naming "ftuYYYYMMDD" (e.g., ftu19990422).

    2. Go to A) Additional System Functions, M) Read/write MARC records, F) Send records out of INNOPAC using IFTS.

Choose F > Send a print file to another system using IFTS.

Choose your file by number. (Your file will have the name you gave it above plus the suffix ".p" (e.g., ftu19990422.p).

Choose host: YOUR HOST. The username is XXXX and the password is XXXX.

Choose T> Transfer files. Look for "Transfer complete" message in pop up box. When you see it, you're done.

  2. Matching Headings

Depending on how M[n]M has been set up, it will be run either automatically or manually. It will look for new ftu files in the IO directory. If it finds one it will examine it for new MeSH headings and try to match these against the records in the NLM distribution file. It will make copies of any matching records and put them in a file called "ftuYYYYMMDD.p.load" (e.g., ftu19990422.p.load).in the IO directory. Finally it will send out an email report on its success.

  3. Loading the MARC MeSH file

    1. Go to A) additional System Functions, M) Read/write MARC records, S) Load MARC SUBJECT authority records from tape or IFTS.

    2. Choose G) GET a file using IFTS:

      1. Name the file (INNOPAC requires this step even though it appears to have no effect whatever on processing; the name you choose will never be seen again).

      2. Choose host: YOUR HOST. The username and password are the same as above.

      3. Choose the appropriate file (e.g., ftu19990422.p.load). A "GET" will appears to the left of the file on the display.

      4. Choose T) Transfer file. Innopac will add the suffix ".ftps" to your file (e.g., ftu19990422.p.load.ftps). Look for "Transfer complete" message in pop up box. You can now quite IFTS.

    3. Process and Load the MARC file:

      1. Choose P > PREPROCESS IFTS file for conversion. Choose the new load file (e.g., ftu19990422.p.load.ftps). INNOPAC will give you an offset listing and the number of records input and output. The preprocessed records will be written to a file with the suffix ".sub" (e.g., ftu19990422.p.load.sub).

      2. Choose C > CONVERT a MARC file, then L> Load records. Choose the new subject file (e.g., ftu19990422.p.load.sub). Records loading will stream by. When done, hit the space bar and INNOPAC will display a report titled "Record Loading Statistics." This reports gives you the startinga and ending Innopac authority record numbers for the batch. It also provides error information. Print this report.
