Children with medical complexity undergoing surgery face significant risks for intraoperative and postoperative complications. Although research is limited, most studies suggest that a deliberate, patient- and family-centered, multidisciplinary approach throughout the perioperative process can reduce these risks. Strategies such as enhanced recovery after surgery protocols and perioperative checklists may offer opportunities to provide standardized and patient- and family-centered care for children with medical complexity undergoing surgery. These strategies allow us to best advocate for these patients in the perioperative period and beyond.
