Improving Care of Transgender Patients [Letter]

Lutwak, Nancy
The recent publication, Is It Okay To Ask: Transgender Patient Perspectives on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Collection in Healthcare, is significant in its discussion of circumstances affecting willingness of transgender patients to disclose gender identity and sexual orientation as well as the participants' focus on the need for improved LGBT education for medical staff. When I Get Like That Put A Gun To My Head

Lutwak, Nancy; Dill, Curt
Yesterday a 95 year old man with prostate carcinoma and widespread bone metastases was brought to the emergency department because of blood in his urine after he pulled on his foley. At triage he was febrile and hypotensive, moaning incoherently which was not a change in mental status. Despite IV fluid hydration and pressors his blood pressure remained low

The Man in Hospital Room 1233

Lutwak, Nancy
As I got off the elevator approaching my uncle's room, I heard a man who was holding a visitor's pass and heading down another corridor say, 'I hate hospitals'. I realized even though I have been a physician and worked in hospitals for over 35 years, when you are visiting a relative, it is a totally different mindset. The place somehow looked cold and threatening

Physicians at veterans administration hospitals need to be knowledgeable about military sexual trauma in women

Lutwak, Nancy
To the Editor: The important recent article by Scott et al examined associations between military sexual trauma (MST), childhood trauma, combat exposure, and military-related posttraumatic stress symptomatology in women who served in the recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The authors concluded that under conditions of high combat exposure, female veterans with MST had significantly higher posttraumatic stress symptomatology compared to female veterans without MST. Multiple publications have documented that a substantial number of women who served in Iraq and Afghanistan had exposure to trauma as children and while in the military.
