The role of stress on the language-independence and code-switching phenomena

Javier, R A; Marcos, L R
This investigation studies the extent to which stress affects the assumed functional separation of coordinate bilingual's linguistic organization. Spanish/English bilinguals were subjects in a GSR linguistic conditioning experiment using two intensities of buzzer sounds (stressful conditions) and two lists of words. One word for each list functioned as the conditioned stimulus. Generalization to semantically, phonemically, and unrelated words occurred in both languages and buzzer conditions. We found a differential impact of the buzzer on the functional separation of the languages, although not in the direction predicted. We concluded that stress produced code-switching, and hence, a primitivization of the subject's cognitive and linguistic functioning is assumed to have occurred. These findings are important in understanding the way stress affects the bilingual's languages at the linguistic and cognitive levels. They are also important in understanding the role of stress in language development and in the transfer of linguistic information.

The making of the psychiatrist-executive [see comments] [Comment]

Silver MA; Marcos LR
The authors reviewed the literature on the factors influencing the development of psychiatrist-executives. The results indicate that personality traits, clinical psychiatry training, training in administration, mentors, and administrative experience have an impact on the making of the psychiatrist-executive. On the basis of these findings, the authors make recommendations for further research

Psychiatrist-executive management styles: nature or nurture?

Marcos, L R; Silver, M A
The authors studied the management styles of the 11 directors of psychiatry in municipal general hospitals in New York City. The Lead-Self Scale and the Lead-Other Scale were used. The directors' Lead-Self Scale scores were compared with those of 11 psychiatric residents. Results show that the directors had a high task/high relationship primary style and a high relationship/low task secondary style. Psychiatric residents revealed a less differentiated pattern of self-perceived management style. The authors speculate about the effects of experience, training, role models, and personality traits on management styles and suggest areas for further research

Who will treat psychiatrically disturbed developmentally disabled patients? A health care nightmare

Marcos, L R; Gil, R M; Vazquez, K M
The authors assess the impact of a policy adopted briefly in New York State to facilitate short-term hospitalization and long-term aftercare of psychiatrically disturbed, developmentally disabled patients. Denied admission to New York State facilities that provide long-term care for the psychiatrically disturbed or the developmentally disabled, these dually diagnosed patients have often languished in the emergency room of municipal hospitals or been inappropriately hospitalized in the acute-care psychiatric unit, sometimes for several months. The authors conclude that the policy expedited hospitalization but failed to facilitate patients' discharge because it did not address the underlying need for suitable aftercare facilities. Overlapping clinical and administrative issues and political exigencies that complicated the policymaking process are discussed.
