Adolescent males, fatherhood, and abortion

Rothstein, A A
The event of elective abortion to terminate unplanned pregnancies brought to the fore and allowed exploration of issues of fatherliness normally latent and, therefore, not observable in adolescence. This is consistent with the psychoanalytic view that fatherly development is an ongoing process begun long before actual parenthood, encompassing an array of conflicts and themes which are conscious to varying degrees in different developmental stages. Issues expressed by the group of adolescent boys studied were compared with those described in the psychoanalytic literature. Most prominent were regressive wishes for nurturance, competition with one's own father, and efforts to meet paternal ego ideals of maturity and responsibility. Parturition envy and strivings for immortality through offspring were not expressed in this group. Themes of fatherliness were not exclusive; they became intertwined with normal tasks of adolescence and individual dynamics as is illustrated with a clinical case

Men's reactions to their partners' elective abortions

Rothstein, A A
Sixty men who accompanied their wives or girlfriends when the latter came for elective abortions were surveyed to explore, broadly, men's experience of abortion. Portions of the survey relevant to health care revealed that most men felt involved in the abortion experience. They initially wished to play an active, but circumscribed, role in matters related to abortion; they wanted to accompany their partners in order to be supportive and considered themselves responsible, along with their partners, for preventing unwanted pregnancies and choosing abortion. In contrast, there was initially a lack of interest in participation in clinic functions or learning about abortion and contraception despite inadequate knowledge. However, as information and comfort with the setting were gained, it became apparent that greater responsiveness was there to be tapped. Permitting men increased participation in abortion services, both educational and psychological, is discussed as advantageous

Abortion: a dyadic perspective [Case Report]

Rothstein, A
Based primarily on responses of men accompanying their sexual partners to an abortion clinic, this exploratory study examines the decision to seek abortion in terms of the relationship of the couple. Findings suggest that, for those who come to the clinic as a couple, the abortion decision indicates neither a pathological relationship nor the likelihood of negative sequelae. Clinical implications and directions for further research are discussed
