Drug combination cuts HIV sharply [Newspaper Article]
Altman, Lawrence K
A combination of an experimental anti-AIDS virus drug and two licensed ones appears to be the most powerful AIDS therapy ever tested on infected patients, a researcher from the experimental drug's developer said at a scientific meeting yesterday. The three-drug combination reduced the amount of HIV, the AIDS virus, by 99 percent to levels that could not be detected by standard laboratory tests in 24 of 26 patients. The effect has lasted for nearly six months in one study, said Dr. Emilio Emini, a researcher at Merck, which developed the experimental drug. The two marketed drugs are AZT and 3TC, which the Glaxo-Wellcome company makes as Retrovir and Epivir. The experimental drug is Merck's indinavir, a member of a new class of anti-AIDS drugs known as protease inhibitors. This week Merck & Co. is asking the Food and Drug Administration for approval to market the drug as Crixivan. Merck officials said they did not know how much the drug would cost

FDA may discourage use of drug/Calcium channel blocker said to exacerbate heart disease [Newspaper Article]
Altman, Lawrence K
The drug is the short-acting form of nifedipine, a member of a class known as calcium channel blockers. The drug is marketed as Procardia by Pfizer and as Adalat by Bayer. Doctors in the United States wrote more than 2 million prescriptions for short-acting nifedipine in 1994. Dr. Robert Temple, a top official of the FDA, said after the meeting in Bethesda, Md., that the federal agency was already working on changing the drug's label, in part because federal health officials warned last August that the short-acting drug should be used ''with great caution, if at all.'' Some studies have suggested that the drug may increase the risk of death from heart disease

SMALLPOX VIRUS ON VERGE OF EXTINCTION WORLDWIDE [Newspaper Article]
Altman, Lawrence K
After several stays of execution, the smallpox virus, one of the biggest killers in history, is back on Death Row. The governing board of the World Health Organization recommended on Wednesday in Geneva, Switzerland, that the last two remaining stocks of the smallpox virus, in Russia and the United States, be destroyed by June 30, 1999. Wednesday's action was the most important step to date in the longstanding plans of WHO, an agency of the United Nations, to destroy the virus. Destruction of the virus stocks, the last vestiges of the infectious agent that has killed, scarred and blinded countless millions of people, would be the first deliberate extinction of a species
