THE DOCTOR'S WORLD; Researchers in Furor Over AIDS Say They Can't Reproduce Results [Newspaper Article]

Altman, Lawrence K
The U.C.L.A. team's initial report led to widespread publicity, intense controversy and fear. The subjects of the study were 133 gay men who were deemed virus-free by the standard AIDS test. Using viral cultures and a new and highly sensitive technique known as PCR for polymerase chain reaction, the U.C.L.A. researchers reported finding the virus in 31 of them, or 23 percent. Dr. [Anthony S. Fauci] said he had felt 'something was wrong' with the U.C.L.A. conclusions from the very start because 'our work and C.D.C.'s showed that when we saw such a case, invariably the individual's standard AIDS blood test soon became positive.' Dr. Fauci said the most disturbing elements of the episode were the inability of the U.C.L.A. scientists to reproduce their own results and the failure of independent laboratories to confirm the findings. 'The burden of proof is now on them,' Dr. Fauci said

WASHINGTON - The federal guidelines to prevent health-care workers from transmitting the AIDS virus to patients are in deep trouble because of growing doubts about their scientific basis. The guidelines, issued in July by the Centers for Disease Control, call on all professional health groups to develop lists of procedures that should be considered as high risk for transmitting the AIDS virus. The guidelines were prompted by an investigation that traced the transmission of the AIDS virus to five patients from Dr. David Acer, a Florida dentist who died of AIDS a year ago
