Jurassic hype masks genetic breakthroughs [Newspaper Article]

Caplan, Arthur
Perhaps most frustrating is the fact that it is fear rather than hope that dominates Jurassic Park. For while there are reasons for concern about where we are headed with genetic engineering and gene therapy, there are more reasons for excitement. As science slowly unravels the mysteries of heredity, medicine, agriculture and veterinary science will change for the better

`Jurassic Park': symbol of real fears [Newspaper Article]

Caplan, Arthur
I think those in the scientific community who argue for either ignoring or simply blowing off the "Jurassic Park" phenomena as just so much Mad Scientist nonsense are missing a great opportunity. Every kid I know under the age of 14 can't wait to see the movie. A lot of adults are curious too. While the themes of science out of control and a science indifferent to human values do not accurately describe what is taking place in genetics today, "Jurassic Park" does accurately reflect a set of anxieties about genetic engineering that have deep roots in our culture

DON'T LET MOVIE `JURASSIC PARK' LAUNCH TERRORISM ABOUT POTENTIALS FOUND IN GENETIC ENGINEERING

Caplan, Arthur
People are worried about what the "experts" are up to with respect to genetic engineering. They are concerned that they are going to find some unhealthy adulterated product on their grocery shelf that represents a large company's best effort to make a buck by genetically engineering milk, fruit or meat. They worry when they learn that researchers have already bred a goat-sheep hybrid, a "geep" in the jargon of genetics, without seeming to have needed permission or authorization from any agency or review board

The telltale heart: public policy and the utilization of non-heart-beating donors

Caplan, A L
The transplant community has quietly initiated efforts to expand the current pool of cadaver organ donors to include those who are dead by cardiac criteria but cannot be pronounced dead using brain-based criteria. There are many reasons for concern about "policy creep" regarding who is defined as a potential organ donor. These reasons include loss of trust in the transplant community because of confusion over the protocols to be used, blurring the line between life and death, stress on family members, and burdens imposed on health care providers when a long-standing policy regarding who can serve as a cadaver organ donor is unilaterally changed. While these concerns are not sufficient reason for abandoning efforts to broaden existing eligibility standards for cadaver donation, they are sufficient reasons for the transplant community to desist in changing existing standards without widespread professional and public discussion.

Health wonks have spoken, now citizens' turn [Newspaper Article]

Caplan, Arthur
I decided to forgo the chance to stand on the White House lawn and bask in the gratitude of [Hillary Clinton] and Bill for giving them the benefit of my insights as to how to spend your tax money in favor of offering advice to 8-year-olds about the importance of keeping their eyes on the ball when fielding grounders. I told my son that there was no need to go back to Washington because the debate about health care is really only just about to begin

Needle exchange programs effective [Newspaper Article]

Caplan, Arthur
My doubts have nothing to do with a failure to understand the enormity of the problem. Nearly a third of all AIDS cases in the United States are the result of needle-sharing among addicts. Someone who has the HIV virus can pass it on to others if they use needles or syringes that have come in contact with the infected person's blood
