Making uniform photographic records in plastic surgery

Morello, D C; Converse, J M; Allen, D
The photographic unit described requires a modest investment in equipment and space, and the photographs can be taken by an office aide after suitable instruction. It provides a means for obtaining clear, comparable photographs--without disrupting office routine. The key to success is consistency in camera settings, lighting, alignment, and positioning. Figures 8 and 9 show representative examples of long-term records

The current status of silicone fluid in plastic and reconstructive surgery

Rees, T D
Sufficient experimental data have been accumulated to demonstrate that medical-grade liquid silicone in recommended doses, using proper techniques, is both safe and effective. The problem becomes one of developing a rational and safe set of treatment guidelines.

The tuberous breast

Rees TD; Aston SJ
The tuberous breast deformity cannot usually be corrected satisfactorily by standard augmentation mammaplasty or mastopexy. The two operative techniques described have been most helpful in dealing with this difficult problem. Anatomic differences in patients may permit or require modification of the techniques to correct a specific deformity. Although our experience to date with these techniques has been limited in number, we have been pleased with the postoperative results

The choice of suture material for skin closure

Aston SJ
Sutures must be chosen on the basis of known biologic properties of the wounds in which they are to be placed, the known interactions of the chosen suture material with tissues of wounds in particular sites, and the intended purpose of the suture material. The following paper concentrates on suture material used to approximate cutaneous wounds, and briefly, the wounds themselves

Antegonial notching of the mandible: an often overlooked mandibular deformity in congenital and acquired disorders

Becker MH; Coccaro PJ; Converse JM
Mandibular antegonial notching is a concavity of the undersurface of the body just anterior to the angular process (gonion) seen in congenital and acquired disorders. The notch tends to be longer in the congenital than in the acquired state, and the ascending ramus is at a more obtuse angle to the body

Congenital ophthalmoplegia in oculoauriculovertebral dysplasia-hemifacial microsomia (Goldenhar-Gorlin syndrome). A clinicopathologic study and review of the literature [Case Report]

Aleksic, S; Budzilovich, G; Choy, A; Reuben, R; Randt, C; Finegold, M; McCarthy, J; Converse, J; Feigin, I
Two patients with Goldenhar-Gorlin syndrome showed paralysis of one or more extraocular eye movements on neurologic examination. At autopsy, a third patient showed unilateral agenesis of trochlear and abducens nerves and corresponding brain stem nuclei. Congenital ophthalmoplegia is not infrequent in Goldenhar-Gorlin syndrome and may be due to hypoplasia or agenesis, or both, of extraocular muscles, extraocular nerves, and brain stem nuclei

Electrophysiological recordings in peripheral nerve surgery: a review

Terzis, J K; Dykes, R W; Hakstian, R W
The use of electrophysiological techniques as an adjunct in the surgical repair of peripheral nerve injuries can improve the quality of the repair and thus the degree of functional recovery. These techniques provide objective information needed to assess the degree of injury and can assist the surgeon in making proper decisions regarding treatment of peripheral nerve lesions. The purposes of this paper are to review: (1) the current theories of the functions of peripheral nerves and their and organs, (2) the development of electrophysiological techniques, (3) the principles involved in their use, and (4) the present and possible future applications of these techniques in peripheral nerve surgery and to outline them
