The uses and limitations of auricular composite grafts

Clairmont, A A; Conley, J J
Composite autografts of skin and cartilage from the auricule are useful in the reconstruction of defects in many areas of the head and neck. However, their use has certain limitations if minimal loss of the graft is to be achieved. A variety of examples are presented by the authors and the limitations are summarized.

Synovial cyst of temporo-mandibular joint imitating a parotid tumour. (A case report) [Case Report]

Janecka, I P; Conley, J J
A previously unreported case of a synovial cyst of a temporo-mandibular joint imitating a parotid tumour is described. A surgical approach involving a total mobilization of the facial nerve is outlined.

Tumors of the parapharyngeal space

Conley, J J; Clairmont, A A
A variety of tumors of the parapharyngeal space were operated upon during one training year at the Pack Medical Foundation, New York. These tumors characteristically present as a mass of the upper neck, behind the angle of the mandible and/or as a lateral pharyngeal mass bulging medially. Surgeons who operate in the parapharyngeal space must be thoroughly familiar with the complex anatomy of blood vessels, nerves, and muscles in this area and possess a thorough knowledge of the variety of tumors in this region of the head and neck.

A preliminary study of intralesional, intralymph node, intravenous and intraperitoneal Corynebacterium parvum treatments in patients with advanced cancer

Cheng, V S; Suit, H D; Wang, C C; Raker, J; Weymuller, E; Kaufman, S
Twenty-one patients with squamous cell carcinoma of oral cavity and/or cervical lymph node and four patients with soft tissue sarcomas were given intralesional (2-4 mg/m2) and intralymph node (2-4 mg/m2) C. parvum injections followed by 5 intravenous (2-4 mg/m2) C. parvum treatments and conventional therapies. Seven patients with Stage III ovarian carcinomas were given intraperitoneal (2-4 mg/m2) C. parvum injections followed by conventional therapies. The local and systemic effects of the C. parvum treatments were described and the anti-tumor effects were evaluated in this series of patients.

Olfactory groove meningioma with paranasal sinus and nasal cavity extension: a combined approach [Case Report]

Persky, M S; Som, M L
A 58-year-old man had an enlarging right fronto-orbital mass. A biopsy specimen of a right nasal cavity tumor was reported as meningioma. Preoperative evaluation including skull roentgenograms, tomograms of the paranasal sinuses, brain scan, computerized axial tomography, and carotid angiography substantiated a large subfrontal mass with paranasal sinus and orbital extension. A combined approach through a right frontal craniotomy and right lateral rhinotomy was used for a complete removal of this tumor. A review of the literature is contained herein.

Permanent threshold shift and cochlear hair cell loss in the kanamycin-treated guinea pig

Prosen, C A; Petersen, M R; Moody, D B; Stebbins, W C; Hawkins, J E Jr
The differential contribution of the inner hair cells (IHC) and the outer hair cells (OHC) in the mammalian cochlea to hearing sensitivity was assessed in six behaviorally-trained guinea pigs by comparing audiograms preadministration and postadministration of kanamycin, an antibiotic that predominantly destroys guinea pig OHC while leaving the IHC structurally unchanged. The results support the hypothesis that only the IHC of the cochlea responds to tones approximately 50 to 60 dB above the threshold of the intact cochlea.
