Creating a Continuum of Learning Growth for the Dental Student Through Emerging Technologies

Harutunian, Michele M; De Bartolo, Angela M; Weiss, June; Brandolin, Bruce; Estafan, Denise
Achieving excellence in students once they are in clinic poses a challenge to educators. New York University College of Dentistry implemented technological programs that will help students achieve their goals. In Simulation courses the students are required to observe a DVD prior to class time that demonstrates the procedure on a typodont (a model of the oral cavity). In the clinical setting the students continue to use these tools and apply the skills that are learned and taught in the preclinical course to clinical practice

Teaming Students Together to Evaluate Each Other's Cavity Preparation Using CAD/CAM Technology

Harutunian, Michele M; Klaczany, Gerald; De Bartolo, Angela M; Estafan, Denise; Wolff, Mark
Part of the New York University esthetic dentistry curriculum for second year students is to introduce them to CAD/CAM technology. Students are taught how to prepare typodont teeth for the fabrication of inlays, onlays, and crowns both for CAD/CAM restorations and other conventional modalities. Imaging their preparations gives students a unique perspective and an opportunity to critique their preparation. This presentation describes an effort to improve student skills in a simulation lab through a team-based environment

Challenging Students with CAD/CAM Technology: Going Beyond the Comfort Zone of Senior Students

De Bartolo, Angela; Gendler, Morey; Estafan, Denise; Hershkowitz, David; Wolff, Mark
Teaching student doctors innovative CAD/CAM technology allows them to develop critical thinking skills to integrate clinical restorative procedures with the precision of graphic design. One way to master this technological advancement is to give student doctors an opportunity to challenge themselves by doing multiple procedures in a single visit. This presentation describes the method in which students use technology and self-assessment criteria to challenge themselves through multiple procedures

ENGAGE: TEACHING PRE-DOCTORAL STUDENTS STATE OF THE ART DENTISTRY USING CAD/CAM TECHNOLOGY [Meeting Abstract]

Apltauer, JJ; Oen, KT; DeBartolo, A; Sherwin, G; Estafan, D
Traditional approaches to fabricating indirect restorations involve a number of tedious steps, all of which open the possibility of error. Computer-generated technologies eliminate much of the tedium and inaccuracies, enabling practitioners to prepare and place permanent, esthetically-pleasing indirect restorations in one patient visit. New York University College of Dentistry (NYUCD) successfully introduces its pre-doctoral students to one of these technologies (the CEREC (R) CAD/CAM unit) during their second year of schooling and continuing throughout the course of the program. This paper is to describe NYUCD's approach to training in CAC/CAM technology and the benefits of this approach

A geriatric patient: age is not a factor

Klodnitskaya, Lisa; Harutunian, Michele M; Mareque Buenos, Santiago; Estafan, Denise; Wolff, Mark S
Objective. A patient presented to the dental office expressing dissatisfaction with the appearance of his teeth, and as a result, of his smile. Our objective was to satisfy his initial chief complaint: "I don't like how my teeth look when I smile." Methodology. Upon completing all initial exams and consultations, an esthetic dental treatment plan was formulated and agreed upon by both the practitioners and the patient. Results. The patient received periodontal treatment first to create esthetic gingival margins. Anterior ceramic crowns followed. Conclusion. The results surpassed all patient's expectations.
